Mind The Journey EP

Mind The Journey is Spencer Sabo of Madison CT. He makes super weird synthy psychedelic pop music. On his eponymous EP he explores some pretty thick territory and the results are both confounding and joyous.

Keith Fullerton Whitman at Firehouse 12

There is no quick way to sum up Keith Fullerton Whitman. He is a ridiculously prolific artist, with recordings, performances, collaborations, as well as an intensely motivated music-geekdom that has taken him around the world. Chances are even if you're half-interested in experimental electronic music, laptop improv, noise, drill n bass, or you have come across Mimaroglu Music Sales, you've heard something by Keith Fullerton Whitman. His performance at Firehouse 12 will be introduce by a talk (free ticket required). A big thanks to all that helped make this come together.

All The Trimmings Benefit @ Heirloom Arts Theatre, November 27th

'Tis the season for good times and giving, and there will be a whole lot of both going on Saturday, November 27th at Danbury's Heirloom Arts Theatre with the 'All The Trimmings' Benefit concert featuring The Stepkids (CT), Mother Brother (CT), Black Churches (MA), Diztrict Allstarz (CT), Ovlov (CT) and Vinyette (NY).

Organized by Matthew Vitti (of Mother Brother) and Amanda Bloom (of The Mercurial), the event had its beginnings this past July when Vitti and Bloom met following a house show and promptly merged minds in setting up "a monumental rock show." According to Vitti, "Amanda and I had similar ideas about the concept and nature of the event, so we worked fairly quickly and cooperatively finding the bands, finding the venue and forming the skeletal structure that would hold this party high and mighty above all else." The main 'nature' of the event that Vitti alludes to is the food and clothing drive that will be taking place along with the show. Benefiting will be the Dorothy Day Hospitality House which, since 1982, has fed and sheltered Danbury's homeless. In addition there will be a booth set up by the China Care Foundation, a Westport, CT. based non-profit dedicated to saving the lives of medically fragile orphaned children in China.

To spice up the good will, Vitti and Bloom have also put together a whole assortment of other activities and treats including a giant Twister competition, $1 plates of pizza and salad provided by Nico’s Pizza, an old-fashioned photo booth courtesy of Tin Sparrows (y'know, for documenting all those big smiles created by giving), and between-band sets by DJ Symetrex who will apparently be spinning faces off at the upstairs bar.

And how about those bands?? In addition to Vitti's own Mother Brother (often engaging, always shape-shifting synth/noise/jam quartet from Bridgeport), a whole stable of great bands will be performing including Black Churches (odd-timed guitar rock from MA. (with keyboards!)), Diztrict Allstarz (hip-hop with guitars from Danbury), Ovlov (solid alt-rock from Newtown) and Vinyette (alternately dream-rock/hard rock with elements of electronica and post-punk from NY.). Headlining will be CT's the Stepkids whose brand of synth-psych-soul (and recent signing to Stones Throw Records) has created a significant buzz around the band. If the potential acts of good will don't draw you to Heirloom Arts Theatre on Nov. 27th, the music should.

Truly living up to its name, All The Trimmings' equal parts of good cause, good fun and good music look to fit the spirit of the season quite well.

Maserati, The Psychic Paramount, Steve Moore (of Zombi)

Sunday, November 14, 2010, Manic Productions presents

Location:
Lilly's Pad (Toad's Place Upstairs)
300 York Street
New Haven, CT

7:00pm - All Ages - $10

Buy tickets now or pick them up at Redscroll Records

words from respective band bios/press:

Maserati is a band from Athens, Georgia whose sound is best described as a combination of post-rock and psychedelic influences. Their music is instrumental, relying on the standard rock instrumentation of guitar, bass, and drums. For fans of The Mercury Program, Red Sparowes, Grails, etc. Temporary Residence Limited

The Psychic Paramount:
Formed just five days before a scheduled tour of France and Italy in Nov/Dec 2002 with original drummer Tatsuya Nakatani. The music and performances were often chaotic and unpredictable lent by a sense of urgency and chance elements. After touring the US in 2004 the group, with new drummer Jeff Conaway, recorded their first studio album Gamelan Into The Mink Supernatural. Released in the fall of 2005, Gamelan was praised by critics and introduced the world to this mysterious power-trio from New York. No Quarter

Steve Moore (of Zombi):
As one-half of Zombi, in which he plays synthesizer and bass guitar, the Pittsburgh native’s affinity for unsettling mood and motif is well-documented over the band’s two self-released EPs and three Relapse releases.

Zombi provides Moore with the chance to turn his blood-red obsession with U.S. and Italian horror films of the 1970s and 1980s into his own brand of cinema for the ears—preferably ones capped with headphones in a darkened room, black candles optional. Armed with a bank of analog equipment and with drummer A.E. Paterra aboard, Moore drew evenly from his years of university music study as well as cassette-tape pedagogy under horror-soundtrack composers John Carpenter, Fabio Frizzi, and Goblin. Gradually, Moore’s infusion of Zombi’s music with progressive-rock elements reached an apex with the “Cosmos” album. Arrangements growing in scope and ambition, fusion-informed rhythmic complexity, and even the odd keyboard solo and anachronistic MIDI sequence recalled not only the mid-1980s AOR-prog of Rush, but also the works of Tangerine Dream and Jan Hammer.

In addition to his works with Zombi, Moore has also recorded material with Microwaves and Panthers, as well as been involved in a number of scores for independent horror movies including 'The Redsin Tower' (collaboration with Scott Hull), 'Horror Business', 'Murder-Set-Pieces' (as Zombi), 'Home Sick' (as Zombi) and more. Apse, Matt Wilga (of Stoned Ambassadors), Roman Wolfe @ Popeye's Garage, Oct. 2nd

This Saturday, October 2nd Popeye's Garage will be hosting Northampton's Apse as well as openers Matt Wilga (of Brooklyn's Stoned Ambassadors) and Roman Wolfe (New Haven) for the first of its final three shows.

Formed in Newtown, Connecticut over a decade ago, Apse has significantly expanded its reach, both sonically and musically since its early days on the local scene. At varying points referencing elements of post-punk, post-rock, krautrock, shoegaze, ambient, industrial, goth and metal, Apse's unique creative vision (led by the band's only constant member Rob Toher) can be technically hard to define. Percussion heavy rhythms, Toher's trademark vocal delivery, and liberal doses of reverb and delay are familiar elements; however, songs push and pull, morph into each other and generally don't stick to one thing for too long. The band's songs seem to be more about an exploration of ideas than two and a half minute pop perfection, though the hooks are there, scattered throughout. Despite limited stateside appeal, Apse has enjoyed significant success abroad, especially in Europe where the band has repeatedly toured to great response. They are also currently signed to ATP Recordings and have made repeat appearances at their label's namesake festival. The current incarnation of the band has been pared down to a relatively meager four-piece (including bassist John Mordecai who also performs in locals Shark and the Tyler Trudeau Attempt) although they surely can still carry a wallop live. This particular performance marks Apse's first Connecticut show in over a year and, based on our calculations, its first show in New Haven proper ever. Openers Matt Wilga (of Brooklyn's the Stoned Ambassadors) and Roman Wolfe (New Haven) bring a complementary mix of pop sensiblity (Wilga) and synth exploration (Roman Wolfe) that should go well with Apse's subtley melodic sonic stew while still retaining their own musical identity.

Shows like this don't come along very often folks (and pretty soon Popeye's Garage won't be either) so get yourselves downtown this Saturday!

Fake Babies, If Jesus Had Machine Guns, Silas Finch

Saturday, October 2, 2010, at Artspace Underground:

Location:
ARTSPACE UNDERGROUND
50 Orange Street
New Haven CT

The first Underground of the school year features performances by local heroes Fake Babies and If Jesus Had Machine Guns, with a live build by Silas Finch.

Fake Babies were recently named the best band in Connecticut as part of The Boston Phoenix's 50 Bands in 50 States, pitting them against the likes of Sleigh Bells and Wavves in an online race to the top. Fake Babies have also shared the stage with Yeasayer, Indian Jewelry, Light Asylum (DJ), These Are Powers, Nite Jewel, Kingdom, Suckers and Dead Meadow. They provide "dirty soul for the alive and well in this little ol' world." Their debut full length album "We Started Blues" is forthcoming on Safety Meeting Records.

If Jesus Had Machine Guns is a project of Jimi Patterson, a filmmaker and musician based in New Haven and New York. If Jesus Had Machine Guns makes angsty synth-ridden bedroom recordings that evoke Ariel Pink or Anton Newcombe, with the help of an ever-evolving cast of supporting players and musicians.

New Haven based artist Silas Finch makes intricate, interactive sculptures from found and salvaged materials. He'll be performing a live build in the gallery.

DJ Booty Beats (Nate from EULA) will be spinning.

The Underground series brings alternative music, experimental time-based art, and cutting-edge performances to Artspace. The event runs from 8 pm - 11 pm, and admission is $5. Curated by Madison Moore, with drinks by 116 Crown. Dress to impress!

Portland, Oregon's Charlie Salas-Humara is essentially the one-man band Panther, who has toured with the Gossip and Ratatat. Known for his unusual chaotic dancing, his eccentric noodlings involve a melting pot of funk, disco, soul, and electro. Raised in the suburbs of Chicago, he moved to Portland in 1995 with his band the Planet The, who stayed together for a decade. At a solo performance night where people from different bands played acoustic, Salas-Humara sabotaged the night with drum machines. With encouragement from friends, he continued experimenting as Panther. The result was Secret Lawns in March 2007, which includes guest spots from members of YACHT, White Rainbow, Plants, Point Line Plane, and E*Rock. After adding drummer Joe Kelly (formerly of 31 Knots), Panther switched to Kill Rock Stars for 14 Kt. God. (allmusic.com)

Digital Leather take their cues from late ‘70s/early ‘80s synthpunk pioneers such as The Screamers, Nervous Gender and The Units. This Arizona-based one man band relies on just keyboards, drum machines and vocals to set the scene of gloomy electronic desert landscapes and gay night club discotheques. This is the life of Sean Foree, who created a masterpiece in his one bedroom apartment in Tempe, Arizona. Live, he borrows members from The Wongs, Reatards, Lost Sounds and Destruction Unit. His music is sure to appeal to fans of the current rebirth of keyboards in punk... but Digital Leather surely push the boundaries of that.

Fiasco: They’re not out of high school but they’ve already been through the press circus. They’ve never gone on a major tour but their Brooklyn shows at DIY spaces still hit overflow capacity. You could blame it on the hype, but Fiasco never would’ve left their parents’ basement if these kids were just another garage band.

As for Eula (a CT Indie fave), Electric Bucket and Murdervan, we're talking homegrown rock action. Lots of fun here from these high energy garage/punk/pop/noise rock bands!
