The Devil In The Flesh: Integrity plays Hartford on May 23

Integrity is one of those bands that people either love or hate. There is no middle ground for this band, which is basically a vehicle for lead man, Dwid Hellion, to express the darkness that exists within him.

New school heshers Cauldron get ready to lay waste to Dewey's Pub in Seymour with NWOBHM legends Diamond Head

Metal has splintered into many different genres of extremity over the years, but despite the fact that there will always be some band trying to take it louder, faster and growlier, there will always be a need for bands that honor the past by playing prefix free metal. You could call this keeping it tradish, but these new sets of band look to pay homage to the traditions of the past, mainly the early-to-mid eighties by playing music that is full of galloping rhythms, monster hooks, boundless energy and in most cases clean singing. Granted they do all this with a modern touch.

Kimono Draggin' - Kimono Gold

Kimono Draggin’ – Kimono Gold
New Haven trio Kimono Draggin’s Kimono Gold was the last release before the funky avant-garde group moved on to their current project, Space OrphansKimonoGold takes the indie-funk sound to a whole new level, creating an album so upbeat and in-your-face that you can’t help but want to move.  There is definitely a party music flair, but with musical integrity to back it up.  It hits hard and can get you pumped for anything.

Show Review: The Grandmothers of Invention and the New, Old Magic of Rock and Roll

Don Preston, deep in thought.

Frank Zappa and the Mothers of Invention were always my Grateful Dead; given the chance, I would have followed them anywhere. I grew up listening to Zappa's zany and complex songs, they got under my skin and deep into my brain. From the age of maybe four, I remember Dad played the Mothers for us kids, sneakily because our mom considered it to be 'inappropriate.' Having been far too young to see the original group live, I was ecstatic when I got the opportunity to watch the newest incarnation of the band, the Grandmothers of Invention. Though they've been performing for ten years together, the current tour is their first in the United States. As you may or may not know, Europeans go completely nuts for Zappa; the band has been having a whirlwind of a time touring both well-known and remote locations on the continent. For a brief time, though, they're rocking on their home turf.
