Boy Genius will return to headline the Friday kick-off show and they’ll be joined by special guest Mr. Ray Neal of Miracle Legion. Those that saw The Geniuses and Mr. Ray play during the Steven Deal record release show caught a great set. Veronica Falls will be joining us all the way from the UK. This is their first U.S. tour and we’re proud to be their first stop. The band has a great pop/shoegaze sound and they have a recent release on the Captured Tracks label. Steven Deal will be back to tear things up with his brand of powerpop.
Panda Riot and Midstates will be making a stop Saturday afternoon on their tour from Chicago. Midstates plays some great psych-influenced pop and Panda Riot should impress with their shoegaze sounds. Eula will bring the rock to the ArtSpace gallery in the early evening.
The ArtSpace Underground will feature The Secret History, featuring My Favorite’s Michael Grace as well as Lisa Ronson, daughter of glam legend and Bowie-collaborator Mick Ronson. The Butterflies of Love will close out the weekend. We’re proud to have the Butterflies of Love fresh from the success of the Mark Mulcahy tribute shows.
Come back, Wednesday, May 26 for the debut of Tyler Trudeau side project Women’s Basketball as well as a visit from UK popsters Horowitz. There may be other special guests from overseas as well.

~stolen from ZukauskasHis composing grows out of an appreciation of natural resonances, acoustic spaces, field recording, and outdoor listening. These influences often enter his music in tangible ways, such as the use of pine sap drops as melodic material in his Soft Song (for solo cello), or the spatial arrangement of players and audio speakers (often spread hundreds of feet apart) in many of his ensemble works, such as Evening Song and Ghost Light Trio.
Matt frequently collaborates with musicians, writers, filmmakers, and visual artists. Since 2007, he has codirected the Hartford Sound Alliance, a CT-based multimedia collective of composers, sound engineers, performers, and video artists, that presents concerts, installations, improvisation performances, and workshops at universities and art spaces across New England, including The Sync Effect, a video/music concert with video artists Gene Gort, Devan Mulvaney, and Liz Stephens.
Other recent collaborative projects include Space Between, a series of intermedia pieces (including canvases, videos, and live performance works) created in collaboration with visual artists John M Adams and J.T. Kirkland, which was premiered at Artomatic 2009 (Washington D.C.), a set of new works currently in development with visual artist Ken Weathersby (involving speakers and mp3 players installed into canvases), and a newly commissioned electroacoustic piece for the Full Force Dance Theatre (to be premiered in April 2010).
In 2009, Matt joined the board of directors of the CT electronic music non-profit organization, SEMI (Studio for Electronic Music, Inc.). In June of 2010, he will be in residency at the Goldwell Open Air Museum in Death Valley (Beatty, NV), along with trumpeter/composer Chris Kallmyer, to develop a new work at the site of the Rhyolite mine and ghost town. He also recently completed an East Coast mini-tour with Bill Solomon of his new concert-length solo percussion work, Ghost Music, which included performances at Artspace Hartford, Towson University (Baltimore, MD), and St. Mary's College of Maryland.
Some of his other notable recent performances and installations include Real Art Ways (Hartford, CT), One Brooklyn Bridge (Brooklyn, NY), Zeigteist @ Outpost 186 (Cambridge, MA), the Warehouse Theater (Washington D.C.), An Die Musik (Baltimore, MD), Strand on Volta (Washington D.C.), the Chapel (Seattle, WA), Geneva Conservatory (Switzerland), Santa Caterina Cathedral (Alba, Italy), Brandeis University (Waltham, MA), Dartmouth College (Hanover, NH), the Hartford Art School (West Hartford, CT), the Patricia Sitar Arts Center (Washington D.C.), WHUH Radio (University of Hartford, 91.3 FM), and Artomatic (Washington D.C.). His music has been performed by numerous professional ensembles, including the Talujon Percussion Ensemble, Yale Brass Trio, and the Hartt Percussion Ensemble.
In addition to composing, Matt maintains a busy schedule as a performer and educator. He is an adjunct professor at Capital Community College (Hartford, CT), where he teaches, directs audio technology lab, and co-curates the Concerts@Capital music series. He regularly performs across the Northeast with singer-songwriter Kat Mulvaney and the Hartford-based indie pop band Sunspots.
Colorguard kicked off the night with a blistering track. Tweaking a series of knobs and messing with antiquated gramophone armatures led to scratched up layers of gritty goodness.
Roman Wolfe followed up with a collection of dreamy loops. He poked away at his Yamaha keyboard to create an ocean of sound.
D. Gookin was my favorite act of the night. Firing off a barrage of non sequiturs, he jammed out on his kit and kept the crowd rocking. (Dare I say dancing?) Everyone sang and moshed along to his electric remix of "1979." He always looks like he's having a good time and his enthusiasm spread through every spectator.
Finally, Teeth Mountain capped off the night with an ear-bending set. The occasional keyboard riff punctuated the percussion as two drum sets blended into one seamless body of beats. A hefty dose of guitar created an undercurrent of reverb that nearly knocked me over. The overall effect was that of a trippy drum circle pulling the audience a little further down the rabbit hole. If this show was any indication of how next week's show will be, I can't wait until Saturday. Game on!
I was perusing around the ol' internets one day and I found myself listening to two guys rap about a day in the life of a pokemon master. I passed the wealth onto my personal friends now its time to pass it on to my CTIndie buds. These two have a show lined up with Ceschi Romas , MC Homeless , H.W. , Brzowski and Riddlore at the Freight St. Art Gallery this Sunday. Not only will you have a packed rap set you'll be surrounded by some of the best Contemporary art in CT.
Back in college, my roomate would play Alkaline Trio's "Radio" ad nauseum. It was a good song then and it's a good song now. I haven't dug into as much of their newer stuff, but they've got a daunting amount of albums out there. Anyway, they've got a reputation as a really great live band, so this is probably a show you'll want to be at. They're also playing with a little band named Cursive, who you might know. Opening for them is The Dear & Departed.
