American Laundromat Records indie-folk artist Julie Peel left on tour beginning on October 1st. She has European and US dates throughout autumn. This will be Julie’s second tour in support of her critically-acclaimed debut album “Near The Sun.” The album has earned Julie rave reviews, an early invitation to showcase at SXSW, placements in television shows such as NBC’s Mercy and CBS’s Life Unexpected, and opening support invites from artists such as Joe Purdy, Tanya Donelly, and Dar Williams.
Julie Peel is a French born, self-taught multi-instrumentalist that writes smart well-crafted folk rock with a pop sensibility reminiscent of Aimee Mann, Neil Young, Cat Power, Beth Orton, and Feist. During the tour Julie will be performing songs from Near The Sun, and introducing several new songs from her upcoming album.

The Field Recordings are about to release a new record. They would help photographing their album cover. The Photo will consist of dozens of young men & young women in funeral dress (black suits/white shirts/black ties for men, black dresses & the sundry other things we don’t even know the names of for women), smiling & laughing while running through the park in a close procession on a sunny/blue day. The leader of the crowd will be waving a large white flag bearing the “Cultural Ouroboros“ symbol, 5 or 6 white “surrender” flags will be scattered amongst the crowd.

Before diving into the epic bio below, just a note: Jenny and Johnny recorded a live performance for Jack White's label Third Man Records back on Sunday, September 26, 2010. When fans arrived at the venue, tickets were stamped, and if these stamped tickets were returned within 3 days to the Third Man shop, a black and blue colored limited to 300 vinyl edition of the live show was available for purchase, but it was only the ticket holders that were given the chance to buy the record. Tickets to the show were only $3 bucks. The record was only $15. Third Man has done this before, including with Nobunny, which actually looks to be still available without any special stamped ticket. Anyway, the show-only release thing is a cool idea. Can't imagine pumping out 300 slabs of vinyl three days after the recording itself was in the can, though. Takes some of us around here three days just to get out of bed.
Jenny and Johnny (featuring Jenny Lewis and Johnathan Rice):
Jenny and Johnny first started working together in Los Angeles in 2005, after being introduced by Conor Oberst. Rice had traveled to Nebraska to make his first record before moving to L.A., where Lewis was beginning work with Mike Mogis on her solo debut Rabbit Fur Coat. They both ended up playing on each others recordings, and struck up a lasting creative relationship. Rice joined Lewis' band for the Rabbit Fur Coat world tour in 2006, and has played live with Lewis at every show of her solo career thus far. Jenny contributed both songwriting and singing to Johnathan's Further North in 2007, and he was quick to return the favor as one of the producers of Lewis' album Acid Tongue and again joining her on the road. During the Acid Tongue sessions, the band cut the song "Carpetbaggers" with Elvis Costello. The legendary songwriter was so inspired with the collaboration that he enlisted Lewis, Rice, their Acid Tongue crew, and the Imposters to help make one of his finest records of recent years, 2008's Momofuku.
During hours of downtime on Lewis' Acid Tongue world tour, she and Rice began writing a batch of songs different from anything they had previously created. The material was fast, ultra-melodic, and often blended both of their voices into one, creating a completely new sound. When the tour wrapped in Japan in August of 2009, Jenny and Johnny were eager to record the new tunes. They enlisted Rilo Kiley's Pierre De Reeder to engineer a nine-day October session at his Bright Street Recorders in North Hollywood with the intention of making demos. Jenny and Johnny played as many instruments as possible, right down to the drums. Jason Boesel lent his considerable drumming talents to the songs that required something more. The four friends worked lightening fast, had a hell of a lot of fun, and were so stoked on the results that Lewis and Rice decided to start a new band and finish the record. Jenny and Johnny packed up a station wagon in December 2009 and drove to Omaha, Nebraska, the place where they first hung out all those years ago, to work with their friend, Mike Mogis.
Jenny and Johnny locked out Mogis' world-class ARC studios for five weeks of tracking, vocals, and mixing during the worst Midwestern winter since the 1860's. The front door of their guest house actually froze shut, so they used an alternate route to get to the studio every day. Cut off from the outside world in a blizzard's haze, the record's personality began to emerge. Gone were the vintage, classic-rock textures of their previous two albums, and in came a brand new sound which was tougher around the edges. The exuberance of love songs like Scissor Runner mask some of the record's darkness, with Lewis chronicling the economic demise of her beloved California in Big Wave, Rice's haunting vocal on Animal, and both songwriters raising a middle-finger kiss off in the acerbic My Pet Snakes. The overall result is genuine and original pop music for Right Now. This is not a Rilo Kiley record, a Jenny Lewis record, or a Johnathan Rice record. This is Jenny and Johnny. They're having fun now, and they want you to, too.
Happy Birthday is Kyle Thomas (aka King Tuff. Vocalist/Guitarist of Witch and Feathers), Chris Weisman, and Ruth Garbus. They formed in November 2008 to play one show at the punk-space “Tinderbox”(RIP), in their hometown Brattleboro, Vermont. Kyle needed a band to play his new pop songs because he was too scared to play by himself. They enjoyed playing with eachother so much that they decided to keep doing it. Sub Pop.

The Love Language
After three decades of sonic observation, you start to realize what really good music sounds like. You know what you like. You like the Beatles. You like Thin Lizzy. You like Stevie Wonder. The declaration, “You’ll love this band!” no longer arouses much excitement. You’ve heard thousands of bands, millions of songs, and find little incentive to embark on any audible adventure when “The Boys are Back In Town” has already been written. In terms of music, we download it, we burn it, but we rarely really listen to it. Perhaps I’m being selfish, but I listen to the Love Language because they write music I wish I’d written. I often picture myself playing these songs for some awkwardly shy, yet strikingly beautiful French girl on a jetty in Quebec, romantically duping her with my plagiarized sentiments. Dishonest, yet undeniably feasible. I could figure out those chords on guitar, and placidly convince some girl that these thoughts and feelings were my own. It’s not like trying to pass off “Blackbird” as an original composition. As you strum, you begin wishing that these poetically mundane moments were parts of your own past, until you realize that they are. That’s what the Love Language is to me: The modest declaration of the universal obvious. Songs written about apartments you’ve lived in and rotary phones that you’ve hung up. Although McLamb’s arrangements are typically overcast, each song reminds you of the towering trees that relish each falling drop. That there are winners and losers, but sometime tragedy makes the most beautiful story. After all, no one would remember the Titanic had it not sunk. That is the Love Language- the celebration of the sinking ship. Bon Voyage.

Pomegranates hail from Cincinnati, OH, where drummer Jacob Merritt, guitarist Isaac Karns, and vocalist/guitarist Joey Cook launched the pop-based indie rock band in 2006. Taking influence from early Modest Mouse and Wolf Parade, the musicians honed their craft and issued the Two Eyes EP in June 2007. Bassist Josh Kufeldt joined the following year, and Pomegranates released their full-length debut, Everything Is Alive, that May. After sharing stages with the likes of Javelins, Islands, and Headlights, the band decamped to northern Kentucky to record their sophomore album, which was subsequently mixed and mastered by Aloha's TJ Lipple in Arlington, VA. The resulting Everybody, Come Outside!, a conceptual record whose sound paid homage to both Talking Heads and French Kicks, was released in April 2009

Although typically classified as an indie rock band, due to their having been on an indie rock label (Kill Rock Stars) for the entirety of their career, the mercurial and unconventional nature of Deerhoof's music makes genre identification difficult, and perhaps inappropriate. But several recurring features can be said to constitute Deerhoof's distinctive sound: unassuming vocal delivery set against hyper-expressive instrumental playing; an elastic approach to group dynamics and rhythm more akin to the rubato of classical music performance practice than rock; odd yet highly memorable melodies; harmonic sophistication and dissonance; disjointed, condensed, asymmetrical and otherwise unconventional song structures; raw and at times strident sound surfaces; improvisation; and general creative restlessness. Xiu Xiu (pronounced “shew shew”) is an experimental band originally from San Jose, California and currently based in Durham, NC and Brooklyn. The band is named after the main character of the 1998 Chinese film Tian yu (a.k.a. Xiu Xiu: The Sent-Down Girl). Xiu Xiu was first formed in 2000 and is the main project of singer-songwriter Jamie Stewart, who records with friends on his home computer. Kill Rock Stars
Father Murphy is 3-piece experimental band from Italy. During live shows Chiara Lee, Vittorio and Freddie work together to play toy instruments, or to play instruments as toys. While Vittorio plays at the same time a kid-drumset and his old violin, Chiara puts together different sounds taken from any kind of old chinese toys and italian keyboards…and Freddie? Freddie is actually a reverend who sings a song from this world and the other one.
