Ferocious Fucking Teeth - S/T

There are some go to bands when looking for something tranquil to fall asleep to. New London’s Ferocious Fucking Teeth is not one of them. Though they are tagged with terms like sludge and stoner metal, they operate without the hazy layers of reverb or infinite drone that the genre is associated with. Nothing is masked with counterfeit noise, leaving only amplified copper and the human voice to carry their trudging weight. Distortion is the primary discernible effect, and that’s just from shear loudness.  On Ferocious Fucking Teeth’s 2011 EP, Hounds, they concentrated mostly on the immediacy of bluesy doom. With their first self titled full length, FFT decelerate the raw ferocity of classic hardcore and meditate on the often ignored details, while maintaining the fierce charm of their earlier material.

Ferocious Fucking Teeth

BEER MISSILE (a Brushback pic? - turns out, no)

Lots of neglected emails came in during several weeks of chaos. At the top of all the shitty press releases was a message from Ferocious Fucking Teeth. Sick ass heaviness. Thank you for giving me some solid stoner-core to enjoy this morning. There's something old school in their sound too, like those Thrasher Skate Rock compilations from whenever that was. They get into time changes that go beyond half-time stomp, but still reserve their right to leave a boot print in your face, they squawk with effected vocals, and use whatever recorded whacked out mumbles that appear on Hounds, the last track on their eponymous 7". The band is nice and raw. Their last.fm page reads: 5 Piece heavy jams, detuned guitar, low ass baritone, two sets of huge drums and cymbals, and torn up throat cords. New London CT. Guess they have a full length on the way. Between that, the new Oiltanker and a new Iron Hand, 2011 may just shape up to be an alright year.

Skeletonwitch:
The drought is over. After years in the wilderness, homegrown heavy metal has finally returned. No longer the domain solely of our European forefathers, metal pure in both delivery and creativity is gaining momentum at breakneck speed in the Western Hemisphere. Leading the charge domestically are Ohio’s sons of Midwestern darkness SKELETONWITCH, who have emerged as forerunners of this new American sound. The ‘WITCH’s mighty sonic fortress is an amalgamation of classic Bay Area thrash, Scandinavian death/black metal and NWOBHM. Upping the ante from their Prosthetic debut, Beyond the Permafrost, these five gnarly longhairs show no mercy and take no prisoners on their new long-player, Breathing the Fire. Prosthetic Records

Withered, formed in 2003, exists to explore the darker aspects of human existence and deliver it to the masses while exemplifying unbridled truths about human nature. From the exploration of coping with tragedy to theoretical philosophical approaches, WITHERED continues to push their boundaries of perception into a realm of solitude and raw introspective discovery. They have released two full length albums, Memento Mori (2005 - Lifeforce) and Folie Circulaire (2008 - Prosthetic), which have both been critically acclaimed and topped numerous year end and decade end lists. WITHERED mixes a blackened atmosphere with the weight of doom metal & old school Scandinavian death metal to culminate a unique blend of extreme styles and expression. Their third full length is due late 2010 for another testament to their ever growing edification of what truly lies within the human animal and how culture & society have greatly compromised humanity’s potential to an extent of irreversible demise. Prosthetic Records

Landmine Marathon was founded in 2004 by bassist Matt Martinez, drummer Mike Pohlmeier and vocalist Grace Perry, the latter of whom periodically blogs for the website of Revolver magazine. Butler joined in 2006, soon after the release of the band’s debut album Wounded. The following year, the group released a praised split CD/LP with Scarecrow; in its review, All Music Guide wrote that “LANDMINE MARATHON’s three tracks have more good ideas than most bands’ albums.” In 2008, the group welcomed guitarist Dylan Thomas and returned to the studio to record Rusted Eyes Awake.Revolver called the album “a gnarling and gnashing blood-caked throwback to 1990, when Napalm Death couldn’t decide if they were going to be grindcore or death metal,” while Lambgoat praises the band’s “pure urgency and grit,” calling the release a blend of “the ferociously thick riffs of Bolt Thrower’s death metal (and) Napalm Death’s blistering grind mentality.” Prosthetic Records

Ipsissimus was founded when His Emissary (guitars) and Haimatokharmes (drums) met by providence on 6/6/06 in New Haven, CT, and found in one another worthy vessels of channeling the occult philosophies into ritual Black Metal.
In November of that year, Tichondrius (bass/vocals) completed the trinity. Within a month they were playing concerts and released the demo “Trampling the Host,” a potent exercise in raw, blasting Black Metal. Over the following years, they established a reputation across New England for technical yet raw live performances, sharing the stage with both local and established Black Metal groups, such as Nachtmystium, Enslaved, Dark Funeral, Krallice, and Watain. In February 2008, Ipsissimus independently released the “Three Secrets of Fatima” EP, Matching their music to orations of black piety that draw from esoteric traditions antique and modern, often composed in the dead tongues of the ancients themselves, Ipsissimus initiates the listener to a Left-Hand Gnosis with a unique and irrefutable statement of American Black Metal. Nails is a 3-piece grind/hardcore assault formed in December 2007 by Todd Jones (ex Terror) along with the help of Taylor Young (Cremetorium), and John Gianelli. With very little internet presence, Nails has spent the past two years winning over audiences of metal/hardcore genres. Nails newest effort titled "Unsilent Death" has sold 1500 copies (CD's and vinyl) in two months with very little promotion and distribution. Nails has co-released their last two efforts with Six Feet Under Records (Mother Of Mercy, Justice, Floorpunch) and have played 40+ shows to date including an appearance at "Sound And Fury Festival 2009" and futures appearances at "This Is Hardcore 2010" as well as Southern Lord Records "Power Of The Riff 2010". Nails will embark on an extensive US tour in the Fall with a European tour in the works. Southern Lord

Product of Waste’s music is the confrontational defiance of Agnostic Front, with the true school hardcore sound to match. Their angular guitar, gut-bursting and piercing vocals easily satiate the primal urge for authentic hardcore

Order of Ennead, hailing from Tampa, FL, play a unique style of extreme metal. Blending elements of death and black metal seamlessly together with emphasis on songwriting and structure. The well trained ear can also pick up the distant influence of the days of thrash. Not forgotten is the ever elusive guitar solo that at times is melodic and other times shredding. The band consists of Steve Asheim (Deicide) on drums, Kevin Quirion (Council Of The Fallen) handling vocals and guitars, Scott Patrick (Resurrection) on bass, and John Li taking care of lead guitars. Earache Records

Ipsissimus
CT black metal. Ex-members of Catalyst. Metal Blade

Based out of Northern Connecticut, Katahdin is a three piece Black Metal band with many influences. New England's dark past has been set aside and forgotten about for hundreds of years. We intend to invoke the unrelenting gloom that once eclipsed this land through armor piercing blasts, consistently ruthless thrashing, and utterly depressing tales of it's past.

Myty Konkeror - I miss the future.

"I miss the future." is a new album out by Myty Konkeror. If you're looking for crazy blissed-out stoner metal grooves, this album is for you. The music elicits the don't-care attitude of 70s anthemic rock with psychedelic experimentation and beautiful guitar dissonance. This album seems to be much more experimental than previous releases, and I can't wait to spin that thing in it's entirety.

You can snag it digitally on their facebook page. They're releasing a limited run of 30 clear records, and cassettes to follow, so make sure you snap one up as soon as possible.

High On Fire
With a heavy-handed approach and a sound that crashes like thunder, HIGH ON FIRE has put the power back in 'power-trio'. Less a band than a supersonic exercise in conquest by volume and sheer heaviness, the band has burned the metal rulebook and forged a new archetype. HIGH ON FIRE was formed by guitarist Matt Pike in late summer 1998. Formed out of the need to simply play guitar again, Pike jammed with and settled on a line-up of powerhouse drummer Des Kensel and longtime guitarist friend George Rice, who made the switch to bass to round out the trio. In the summer of 2004, HIGH ON FIRE was joined by bassist Joe Preston (THRONES / ex-MELVINS). Preston replaced Rice, and made his live debut on a 14 city U.S. trek that concluded in Chicago, IL where the band entered Electrical Audio Studios with engineer Steve Albini to record Blessed Black Wings. Blessed Black Wings exploded onto the scene. From the start the band hit the road and traveled the world, playing esteemed festivals such as All Tomorrows Party (at the request of The Mars Volta), Dour (Belgium), Quart (Norway), Intonation (Chicago), Hellfest (France), as well as the inaugural Sounds of the Underground Tour. Additionally, the band headlined internationally with the likes of MASTODON, CLUTCH, GWAR, and many more. Preston was replaced toward the end of the touring cycle by former ZEKE bassist Jeff Matz.

Priestess is a Canadian rock band formed, in Montreal, Quebec in 2003 by Mikey Heppner (vocals/guitar), Mike Dyball (bass), Vince Nudo (vocals/drums), and Dan Watchorn (vocals/guitar). Mike Heppner was playing with The Dropouts at the time when three of its members headed to New York to form The Stills. Left on his own, Heppner formed a new band: Priestess. In 2005, the band released their debut album, Hello Master. The release was issued via Indica in Canada and on Ace Fu in the U.S. A major-label recording contract with RCA followed in January 2006.North American tour dates opening for Dinosaur Jr. followed that spring. Priestess toured with The Sword, Early Man, Diamond Nights, Black Label Society, Black Stone Cherry, Converge, Mastodon and thrash metal pioneers Megadeth as a part of their “Tour Of Duty” tour in June of 2007.

Black Cobra is a doom metal and sludge band from Los Angeles, California. The band was formed in 2001 by Jason Landrian and Rafael Martinez (who is also the current bassist for Acid King).

Bison B.C.
When Bison took its first step amps were scorched and drums were smashed. Born of the ashes of seminal Vancouver skate-thrash band S.T.R.E.E.T.S., Bison are every head banger’s dream. Their riffs are colossal and flow like a mighty river into a sea of fuzzed out shredding. Their message is punk rock angst and revolution, with the occasional nod to white wizards, the king of swine and a mythical beast called the “Stokasaurus”.

Cable w/ Black Pyramid and Brothers & Sisters

Rockville, CT natives Cable formed way back in the early 90s and are back together with a vengence. I honestly thought they were still broken up, but not only are they not, but they also just released their brutal new album The Failed Convict. They've gone through a bunch of sonic changes over the years, but this is a sludgy, noisy release and sounds like the musical equivalent of a severe brain aneurism. I can't wait to see these songs live.

Also playing are Northampton's Black Pyramid. It's impossible not to mention Sleep, Sabbath and Earthride when you're listening to these guys, but they also manage to blend it all in a sonic explosion that rises above the sum of it's parts. If they keep making music, they're going to be huge.

They haven't been around long, but just listening to their "Victor" demo, you can already tell that Brothers & Sisters are going to be legendary in CT. The demo sounds like an old Pearl Jam tape you'd stumble across moldering away in someone's basement, but buried under all the fuzz and hiss you'll find killer hooks and fantastic over-gained 60s-styled backing vocals.

This show's going to be intense. Wear brown pants.

tiny reviews pt. 2

Ponybird - Full Cold Moon

Ponybird is the project of Jennifer Dauphinais, and Full Cold Moon is her first full release. An introspective minimalist folk album with all kinds of strange instrumentation that drives you to madness; it's an intensely personal work, and it's still psychadelic and fun. The vocal harmonies are to die for, and the entire album just has this lush sound that I can't get enough of. It also features a ton of local musicians and names you should be familiar with if you read our blog regularly... You can stream and purchase the album right here.

Coldsnap - Godspeed

Wow, Coldsnap has come a long way. I wasn't as into their demo CD-R as Jay was, but this changes things a bit. This 7" has two great tunes on it. It's sludgy hardcore - stomping rhythm and killer riffs. The first track "Can You Even Hear Me Scream" is a doozy. Pick it up at hot air press. Hell yeah.

Crooked Hook - The Captain Will Be Your Guide

Crooked Hook is heavy shit, man. It's great stoner metal - I dare you not to love the hell out of this album. Everything's buried a layer of deep, wooly fuzz, and kicks a serious amount of ass. You can stream the whole thing on their last.fm, and snag a copy at Safety Meeting. While you're there, you might as well snag a copy of the self-titled EP which is equally badass.

Subarachnoid Space

Subarachnoid Space will be playing a free show at BAR in New Haven on Sunday night. Hailing from Portland, these acid/psych rockers are going melt minds. They just released their new album Eight Bells on Crucial Blast Records, which is cripplingly loud and spaced out. It's something that will take hold and not let go. Believe it or not, they've been around since 1996, and endured countless lineup changes, and put out some really fantastic material throughout all of it. It's really a great album, you should check it out if you're into harder post-rock or stoner bands like Grails or 5ive. I'm sure that their live show is going to kick serious amounts of ass. Also playing with them is OvO, an experimental black metal band from Italy, so get ready for a seriously intense night.

Goblin Cock
Featuring Rob Crow of Pinback, Heavy Vegetable, Thingy, etc. Goblin Cock is a band from beyond time, beyond space, beyond your naive concept of dimension in METAL. Since before your pathetic "god" had supposedly "created" you and your kind, Lord Phallus was hunkered in a cybertimeship/fun dungeon skating the layers of what was considered "true metal"in all societies and in all generations. Eventually His Majesty realized that he really didnt care and launched a full-scale war against bland metal with and emphasis on ACTUALLY HAVING A GOOD TIME! "Bagged and Boarded" is the first assualt on your laughable 5 senses (Lord Phallus and his kind have 32). Expect a future double whammy in the form of "Come With Me if You Want to Live" - a collection of new supercharged action-metal wonderhits, and "Dragonfucker" - the 20+ minute uberpiece with a bside of numerous BRUTAL cover songs (the roaches, the osmonds, and the monkees have been rumored). Absolutely Kosher Records

Warship
New project by From Autumn To Ashes members Francis Mark (vocals/drums) and Rob Lauritsen (guitar/bass). The duo’s forthcoming Vagrant Records debut, Supply And Depend, showcases a startling union of imagination and brutality for a lethal sonic arsenal entirely set apart from the signature attack of their former band. ENDLESS BOOGIE w/Federale

LOCATION:
BAR
254 Crown St
New Haven CT
FREE - 9:00PM - 21+

Meet Endless Boogie, the best-kept secret in New York's rock scene. The band's sound is a meltdown of metal, psychedelic and classic rock with a heavy dose of riffage, a kick-ass beat and super-cryptic lyrics. It's thunderous and mellow at once. To put it another way, it goes well with beer. (papermag)

"...Federale relies on the oldest tools of the trade: loud guitars, pounding drums, great musicianship and hooky songwriting. Their self-released debut is a triumph of twisted blues and boogie played loud and fierce and frenetically... this is not a record of dark and sludgy dirges, this is rock and roll." -Josh Madell (Other Music)
