Florida=Death - Post Information (best LP of 2012 so far)

Florida=Death are back with the best god damned album of the year. You heard me. This is front to back my favorite collection of songs to be put out in CT in 2012. I defy any and all of you musicians to make me eat my words. There are still 2 months left.

The Lost Riots - 1978

Lauren Lennox doesn't like the The Lost Riots. This was the band infamous for their Summer 2012 show at Pitkin Plaza's Ideat Village music festival, where the New Haven police department showed up with pepper spray. Prior to the concert, Lauren Lennox, the building manager for neighboring apartment building 360 State, had sent out an email to tenants urging them to file noise complaints against the performance. Complaints were indeed filed and cops were dispatched. Festival organizer Bill Saunders was subsequently taken away in handcuffs for failing to produce a permit for the show as well as inciting a riot (ironic!). There were about fifty people in attendance, who mostly responded by hurling some 'fuck you's' at the cops and recording Saunder's arrest, along with said 'fuck you's'. Since then, 360 State and festival organizers have reached some kind of agreement after a lengthy debate over how New Haven's culture ties in with the proper sound ordinances. All in all, it was a good story for The Lost Riots, who got their namesake before their show was cut short by their own title.

WESU Record Fair on Sunday: FREE!

WESU is having their bi-annual record fair on Sunday. It's free admission and I've personally found some great things there in the past. I'm looking forward to digging for more. The past couple times they've had food trucks outside too. And hell, it's a nice enough campus to walk around (if it's not raining - which I fear it very well might).  Good Sunday afternoon activity; it's going from 11AM-4PM. Directions here.

Empty Vessels - Restraining Order EP

Empty Vessels do that confusing category thing, where you can't tell if they're hardcore punk or something of a metal outfit. And their guitarist is female, which messes up the possibility of baritone gang choruses and awesome macho promo shots with crossed, muscly forearms. They sound heavy and dangerous - aggressive even. But also like they're having fun, and not taking themselves too seriously. They sing about cool metal shit like alien spacecraft, betrayal, owls, and Michael Cera? The whole thing just pisses me off.

Third Man Rolling Record Store at Redscroll Records Saturday (10-20-12) 6-8PM

The Third Man Rolling Record Store will be stopping at Redscroll Records on Saturday (10-20-12) from 6-8PM.

Welp, that pretty much covers it. Let me jab at you some more though.  Third Man Records is a label run by Jack White of the White Stripes (and many other projects). There is also a flagship store in Nashville, TN. As an extension of this store and within the mission of reaching as many young kids who haven't ever been to a record store Mr. White had an old food truck converted into a rolling record store. The truck carries a variety of Third Man Records releases (many of which are exclusive to the Third Man store). Here's the introductory video for the truck:

You can follow the truck on twitter here as well. They make mention of exclusives from time to time and of course say where they at the time. There is also a blog post on the Redscroll Blog here.

Come spend Halloween with Witch Mountain at BAR

When Witch Mountain went on hiatus in 2002, after a five year span of activity, to tend other projects and some real life concerns, the future looked a little uncertain for these Portland, Orgeon-based doomlords. But things changed a bit in 2009, when they had their friend Uta Plotkin sing a song of their first record, "...Come The Mountain", at a show opening for Pentagram and Danava in their hometown. She was a hit and the band had a new permanent vocalist.

BEEF SHOCK The Musical - as performed by Neon Leather Drip @ The Sidestreet Grille on 10/20

So here's a strange one. Neon Leather Drip will be performing their new musical, Beef Shock @ The Sidestreet Grille in Hamden on Saturday. They have apparently spent quite some time developing a performance that lasts a couple of hours and features music from their upcoming LP Beef Strokinoff. All I can say is: WTF?!??!
Here is a video by Neon Leather Drip so you know what you're in store for!

10/5 – The Early November, Cartel, Seahaven, Suns (CT) @ Heirloom Arts Theatre Show Review

Quick fact: For anyone who wants to see some talented musicians, be sure to check out any of these artists and show some support! This show was awesome!

I had no idea what to expect when going to this show. As a huge fan of specifically Cartel and Ace, I was excited to see what these guys could do live. However, since I hadn’t been to The Heirloom Arts Theatre in a few years I was weary about how the sound and the crowd would be. The Heirloom Arts Theatre turned out to be a great venue and the crowd dynamic was very, well, unique.

Jake Ryder - Recordings

I love this.
This is what happens when a wider populous gets their hands on recording gear, the spectrum of music widens dramatically. What we are witnessing is growth exponential to the boom of outsider music in the 70's and 80's with the availability of four track cassette recorders.
Jake Ryder makes tunes born of the ideas of the past but forged firmly in the modern, creating an environment of sound full of buzz and saturated treble that naturally thrills.
