Review: Speakeasy "Southpaw"
Speakeasy is pure emotion set in motion. It’s like a chemist
took a few moles of Titus Andronicus and Snowing and mixed them ferociously in
an Erlenmeyer flask, only to spawn the most real music you’ve ever heard. The
trio’s latest album titled “Southpaw” is a product of something grandiose.

Brian Connor Convention (or BriCon for short) is a quasi-yearly show put on by Brian Connor featuring friends bands. This BriCon will be the last in CT for some time (possibly ever) as Brian is moving to Texas to fulfill his destiny.

Black Stool reunite for good cause
You knew it eventually had to happen, but local grindcore miscreants Black Stool, which features Mike Polce (guitar), Dennis Morin (bass), Chris Barry (drums), Kenny Albert (vocals) and some guy named Chip McCabe (vocals) have reformed, but this time it's for a good cause. They will be performing this Friday, May 18 at Cherry Street Station in Wallingford to benefit the Yale Smilow Cancer Center in New Haven. (They were helped along with this by Deolinda Sullivan).

This quintet credits
duende—a term I just learned from writing this review, it can be defined

electric balanced tunes on an ep titled “War-Torn”.

Mares Of Thrace bring their beatifully noisy racket to Cherry Street on May 17
uncredited - from the Mares of Thrace fb page |
Calgary-based Mares Of Thrace are a wicked noise/doom duo that turns it up and kicks it out on a regular basis. What may you say they turn up and kick out? Well, they turn up their amps and then kick out a loud noisy sound that wouldn't be too out of place on the Amphetamine Reptile label in the mid-1990's. Guitarist vocalist Therese Lanz along with co-conspirator, drummer Stefani MacKichan, have been turning heads and blowing speakers since the release of their debut record, "The Moulting" on the Sonic Unyon Metal label in 2010.

Paul Caporino Interview
As posted earlier Paul Caporino of M.O.T.O will be playing at Willimantic Records on Mother´s Day May 13th. He will be accompanied by CT´s own Estrogen Highs.
Show Review: The Grandmothers of Invention and the New, Old Magic of Rock and Roll
Don Preston, deep in thought. |
Frank Zappa and the Mothers of
Invention were always my Grateful Dead; given the chance, I would
have followed them anywhere. I grew up listening to Zappa's zany and
complex songs, they got under my skin and deep into my brain. From
the age of maybe four, I remember Dad played the Mothers for us kids,
sneakily because our mom considered it to be 'inappropriate.' Having
been far too young to see the original group live, I was ecstatic
when I got the opportunity to watch the newest incarnation of the
band, the Grandmothers of Invention. Though they've been performing
for ten years together, the current tour is their first in the United
States. As you may or may not know, Europeans go completely nuts for
Zappa; the band has been having a whirlwind of a time touring both
well-known and remote locations on the continent. For a brief time,
though, they're rocking on their home turf.

Get primitive with Mark Sultan this Friday at Cafe Nine
Mark Sultan, also known as BBQ, through his association with King Khan, is a garage rock jack of all trades. For better part of his adult life, in a myriad of bands (The Spaceshits, Los Sexareenos, The Almighty Defenders, to name a few) and as a solo performer, he has been cranking out quality primitive rock n roll. Taking inspiration from the punk/hardcore DIY ethos of going out there and doing your own thing on your own terms, he has been applying this way of doing what you love to a more raw and soulful type of music.

Iron Hand, Stone Titan, Elder and Gowl this Saturday in Wallingford
There is another awesome show going on this weekend somewhere in Wallingford, with a bunch of great bands, who are listed below. As always, you will be meeting at Redscroll Records and then taken to the secret place. So if any of the bands listed below are your cup of filth, then head on down. The show is relatively cheap and the bands are really good. So there you have it.

I NEED THAT RECORD!
So, remember that awesome record store documentary that came out a few years ago? The one featuring the late and legendary Trash American Style and how the local record store is really becoming a rare thing these days. :( Well if you have not seen it, or even if you have, come down to Willimantic Records on Sunday May 6th at 5pm, they will be having a screening of "I need that Record!". We all might tear up a little bit... But have no fear, Malcolm and his blue guitar will be there playing some great music. Be there.
Seriously. Go.
