Mercy Choir - 2 Machines In The Garden

Paul Belbusti's need to create art and experiment knows no bounds. Easily the most prolific artist in the CT area, Paul's main musical act Mercy Choir starts out the new year strong with the first of what I am sure will be many releases this year.

The Guru - Native Sun

For four guys aged seventeen to eighteen to produce a band like The Guru, it's hard not to wonder if they are accomplishing too much too soon. I mean, guys, really? Aren't we all supposed to start a band like Old Skull in our parents' basements first? Eddie Golden III, drummer and lead vocalist for The Guru, completely skipped over this prerequisite. Golden put together some very interesting solo recordings, Grave Jams and Life of a Pirate, which are both eerie, dreamy and demented lo-fi classics that, it seems, are merely Golden's dalliances.

So, Golden's madcap solo recordings are one thing, but then to come along and front a band from behind the kit - that is some next level shit. Best of all, his voice is similar to, but in many ways better than, Isaac Brock's. I guess it's safe to go further and say that The Guru are in a general way a little like major-label Modest Mouse, but The Guru have a clearer, happier creative pool to pull from, that hopefully they won't someday evaporate with Brock-like drug-fueled antics.

Kyle McEvoy and Colin Sullivan are frenetic guitar players, plucking around the fretboard in that lilting post-hardcore style that seems to be all the rage with proficient young rock guitarists these days, e.g., Fugue, Duchampion. Dan George locks his bass right in with the band, and without the showy bullshit talented novice bassists often succumb to. I think all these guys probably started jamming before they learned to talk. The evidence that they focused too much on music from the get go is that they all go barefoot, and look suspiciously like Huckleberry Finn, especially Kyle McEvoy in his jean cutoffs. Take a break from playing and learn how to tie a pair of sneakers for Christ's sake.

The Guru's full length Native Sun is out on Sex Cave Records in five days (June 11), eight tightly efficient summer songs, with chanty choruses, crisp guitars, and ass kicking energy. The record was produced by the band and live tracked in a cottage in the middle of the woods in Middlebury, CT. It's an impressive record, and a must-own for for anyone into their sound.

Check the band out at their CD release show Saturday, June 11, 2011, at The Space in Hamden. Also playing that night are, Fugue, High Pop, Pachangacha, Black Churches, Slam Donahue, and a Lovers and Thieves reunion. Tickets are $12 bucks.

last.fm bio:
Margot & the Nuclear So and So’s is a 6-piece indie-pop/orchestral pop band from Indianapolis, Indiana. The band, which was formed in 2004 by Richard Edwards and Andy Fry (formerly of Archer Avenue and The Academy, respectively), is currently signed to Epic Records.

Their debut album, The Dust of Retreat came out in 2006. At this time, the band was signed to Artemis Records and had 8 members. In 2008 the band signed to Epic Records and (on 7 October) released two new albums, Animal! and Not Animal. The band originally planned to just release “Animal!”. However, Epic disagreed on their song choice, and compiled a different list, which would later become “Not Animal”. Eventually, after dispute over which version would be released, it was decided to release both at the same time.

In August 2009, 5 of the band’s members left. They are all involved in other projects, most notably Pravada.

While the band, and Richard specifically have given many explanations to the band’s name; this is all in fun. As the name was created as an anti-name; not meant to have any real meaning, just to make fun of other ridiculous names. The name “Margot” comes from Gweneth Paltrow’s character in Wes Anderson’s “The Royal Tenenbaums”.

The band’s sound, categorized as “chamber pop”, has been compared to the indie rock groups Arcade Fire, The Decemberists, and The Shins, while incorporating elements of singer/songwriters like Paul Simon and Conor Oberst.

with A Great Big Pile of Leaves and Suns

bios from Manic's site

Brooklyn-based trio, A Great Big Pile of Leaves got their start in 2007 when guitarist/singer Peter Weiland and drummer Tyler Soucy took time from their prior projects to start writing material of their own. The first six songs came together as the self-released EP The Fiery Works, which the duo put out as a free download on their Web site. As word spread online, the band’s fanbase grew along with Weiland and Soucy’s excitement to get back to recording.

A Great Big Pile of Leaves toured last Fall on their first national tour with Motion City Soundtrack, Say Anything, and Saves the Day. “This fall tour is exactly what our band needed to be doing and at the perfect time so we’re extremely grateful for the opportunity that we have,” Soucy continues when asked about those large-scale shows. “I spent most of high school listening to these three bands, so it’s going to be pretty surreal to walk off stage every night and watch the rest of the line-up,” he adds, “it’s going to be a great time.”

Suns are a three-piece rock band from Easton & Redding, Connecticut. The songs on their first EP, “Three Songs” are poppy but carry certain darkness to them as well. Their live show strives to be as dynamic as possible with tight musicianship, grand build up’s, and an unrelenting intensity. Suns will be releasing their new 6 song EP, “Be Good Boy” at the beginning of the summer.

Over the past three years, The Gay Blades have built an international following on their side-stepping demeanor, their unpredictable live shows and, of course, their unhinged manic sound. But while their fan base is still marveling at how the larger-than-life duo can fill aural spaces so completely as a two-piece, the band is ready to unveil their sophomore album, Savages, which promises to astonish both their current devotees and future fans alike.

Those Mockingbirds from NJ released their debut EP in mid 2010. The EP debuted at #1 on the Amazon Movers and Shakers chart. Those Mockingbirds recently released a cover of Fleetwood Mac's "The Chain" and are writing new material for a follow up record.

Vuvuzela - Classical Harp, Upright Bass, Piano and Eccentric drums compose despondent circus esq. songs with odd meters. Josh and James from Kiss Kiss are joined by Stephanie Babirak and Ben Goldstein in the odd musical combo.

Jukebox The Ghost @ The Space 1/28

This Friday night, the 28th, Philly indie pop band, Jukebox The Ghost will play at The Space in Hamden. The show starts at 7pm and will be supported by CT band The Guru, NJ band Goodman Brown and NY band Great Dane.

During a conversation with Jukebox´s Ben Thornwill he told me that the five week long tour is just starting and a part of it will be on a cruise liner opening up for Barenaked Ladies. Needless to say they´re looking forward to getting away from the cold for a while and who could blame them.

The band has released two records 2008´s Let Live and Let Ghost and Everything Under the Sun that came out on Yep Roc last fall. Their first record was pretty successful by indie standards and Ben credits that to the fact that the band was relentless on the road and played over 300 concerts to promote it. Its highest chart position was #38 on Billboard´s Top Independent Albums. So it´s clear that their hard work paid off and they have been able to give up their daytime jobs.

Everything Under the Sun was recorded here in Connecticut by Peter Katis in his Bridgeport Studio. They didn´t see much of the city since they came here and stayed for about five days at a time. Most of that time was spent working on the record which took them two months in total to make. It was recorded on both tape and hard drive, drums and some guitar were analog and the rest digital.

Last September they were asked to do the David Letterman Show 12 hours in advance. Ben was in Philly when the offer came and the rest of the band in NYC. They jumped on the chance and according to Ben it was an amazing experience to do the show.

So come Friday night put on your snowboots and get yourself to The Space in Hamden and enjoy the show. Admission is $12 or better yet $10 if you buy your ticket in advance.

DC's Jukebox the Ghost writes a fresh breed of melodic pop tunes driven by fiery rock momentum. With quirky lyrics and inventive songwriting, fans and critics have drawn parallels with the pop sensibility of Elvis Costello, the flamboyance of Queen, the wit of They Might Be Giants, and the creative rock of The Flaming Lips.

The Guru is a four piece band from Watertown, Connecticut. They cut their teeth in small shows for handfuls of friends in the back of a main street coffee house. Soon they streamlined their psychedelic-influenced songs into songs with more focused melodies, slicker guitar parts, and dance-influenced conversations between the bass and drums. They grew comfortable playing shows after a summer of playing every show they could get booked on in New England. Along the way they developed a dedicated fan base that shows up to every show, to exchange energy, dance, and sing.

Goodman Brown is a NJ-based pop collective. Comprised of three singer-songwriters who grew up in the same town, the band formed over their mutual musical ambitions and interests. The band is best defined by their catchy melodies, tight harmonies, piano riffs, and gritty guitar. Goodman Brown's music has drawn praise from influential figures including Pat DiNizio (the Smithereens), Ray McVeigh (the Professionals), and Judd Lander (Culture Club).

The band recently finished recording their debut full-length Moon Digby, which was recorded in NYC and NJ, and mixed by Anthony "Rocky" Gallo (Cymbals Eat Guitars, The xx, The Killers) at the Cutting Room Studios in New York.

Great Dane:
Formed at SUNY Purchase, Great Dane was formed in September of 2009. Making their mark in Manhattans lower east side, the group has made a name for themselves with their piano based, indie rock sound accompanied with a powerful live show. Combining a natural folk sound with a driving rhythmic force, Great Dane will give you a show you can remember.
